Man, its been a long time...how has everyone been? *crickets*

...Errr...ok then, I guess I'll start off by apologizing for the long wait. I know you guys have been DYING to see new content here, but the site got shoved under the rug while I was trying to...you know, survive in a completely new environment.

It's been six months since I left my hometown of Cleveland and journeyed out west. There have been ups, there have been downs, and there have even been some very scary situations...

This hasn't been easy, and I doubt it ever will be. Leaving behind a place you've called home for the past 25 years never is. There have been times where I've said 'good riddance', and times where all I wanted to do was go back home. As difficult as the past six months have been, I think I made the right choice. While I'm still finding my way around and have yet to make any real friends out here, I feel comfortable. While six months is a long time, it's just a blink of an eye in getting used to a new place – I'd say it will take at least two whole years before I feel fully integrated with the area...and I may not even be here by then.

I've been spending this time mainly getting used to the neighborhood, the city, and meeting people. It helps having a friend out here that I've known since high school who already knows a fair amount of people. As a result, I kind of skipped the whole 'awkward by myself' phase and moved immediately into the 'getting out and about' phase. There have been periods of time where I would always be out and about somewhere for weeks at a time, and there were also times where I became a complete and total hermit. I'm still trying to find that sacred 'middle ground' when it comes to that.

League Pass has been one of my best friends while I've been out here. It allows me to keep up with my favorite team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and has also allowed me to catch some NBA games that I wouldn't see otherwise.

So what exactly have I been doing? Well, besides the obvious (working), here's a rundown of some of the things that I've done over the past six months with some numbers:

  • Went hiking – Once (and it was really, really hard!)
  • Saw a concert – Three times
  • Tried new food – Seven/Eight times...some of it very good, and some not
  • Met new people – Too many times to count...
  • New games bought/played – Six (Does not include FFXIII)
  • Anime series watched/finished – About seven, might be more but I can't remember
  • Fixed the car – Once (The battery died...first time I ever replaced one before – I'm a regular Mr. Handyman!)
  • Times I've complained about the weather – NONE
  • Trips I've been on – Three (One road trip, one business trip, and one visit home)
  • Basketball games I've been to – Two :-(

Life is keeping me busy

E-mail Print PDF

As in, 'not being able to update the site regularly' busy.  I've been working really hard at my day job.  Things have gotten really hectic over there lately.  In addition to that, trying to find some time to play some good video games is very rare.  Mostly it's just a quick game of NBA 2K9 or Wii Bowling with friends.  Plus, it's way too nice outside, and nice weather is rare around here since we only see the sun three times a year, apparently.

Learning XNA is going...slowly.  It's tough.  I know that I know C#, and I know it very well (I use it every day!) but this is entirely different.  Anyone that says that it's easy to transition from being a regular ol' programmer to game programming is either lying, or is a genius.

As for everything else, things have been...well, up-and-down.  I can't really go into detail, but lets just say that you should value your close friends and family...and keep people that you can't trust far, far away from you.  I learned a lot in this past month.

Hopefully, within the next two weeks, a major change will be on it's way.  What is that, perhaps?  Well, you'll have to wait until then to find out! And no, it isn't a site re-design.  This could be much, much, much bigger than that, my friends.

Oh, and by the way, a very special thank you to my buddy that runs the hosting for the site...if I could give him any extra business I would.  If you do visit him, tell him I sent you!

Until next time...

Be careful what you wish for

Well I must say after another rather uneventful week, I'm glad it's finally Friday.

Work has been going well, there are actually quite a few tasks I've been working on, which is always good.  Other than that I've been busy learning about XNA since it's based off of the same programming language I use everyday (C#).  I've got to be careful because I'm slipping in my gaming skills...seeing as my friend actually beat me TWICE in NBA 2K9 yesterday (Honestly I only have myself to blame for the first loss...).

Today I learned something that I might have forgotten a while back...be very, very careful what you wish for.

Now, I've been working in the corporate world for 2 and a half years, and to be honest, the job does have its 'slow' moments.  When you don't have many pressing issues, things can get downright boring at times...and I was actually wishing I had more responsibility and more of a leadership role on my team.

Well, I now take that back.

Today was a rare occasion where I had lunch with the management crew and our team lead.  Normally, they would stick to topics such as sports, TV, and the like...not today.  Instead, our lead chose to vent frustrations over certain things which I can't really discuss here.  Interesting, but scary...makes me wonder what I would hear if I was a fly on the wall for some of the administrative meetings.  It really made me think twice about the weight of being a leader...I mean, you may have to lead over people you don't necessarily want to...people who might be lazy and not doing such a great job, or those that just disagree over everything.  How do you manage to strike a balance between being patient and putting your foot down?

I know I still want that leadership role someday, but I honestly think I still have a lot more to learn before I'm ready for it...I'm glad just being a regular ol' developer - for now.

So...who is this guy?

E-mail Print PDF

Welcome to what I hope will be a somewhat daily thing on the site - King's thoughts.  This section will be more of a casual, free-flowing area where I'll talk about things other than Video Games and current Projects.  Think of it, if you will, as a more 'inside' look of the things going on around me and random thoughts of mine.

...Starting with the next post.

This post, being the first one and all, is going to be special.  Today, I'm going to answer some questions that curious folks may have about little ol' me.  If and when I actually get some visitors (Wonder how much it is for ad space these days?), I may add more questions as long as they aren't too revealing about my personal life.

Is Kingahnah your real name?

No, of course not!  Who would be so egotistical to name a site after themselves?  It's a name I came up with during one of my many gaming sessions. (Okay, I lied, it is my real name)

Wow! Where did that name come from?

My father, actually...I was named after him. My grandfather on his side was originally from India.

How many times were you asked that question?

Way, way, way too many to count...lemme put it this way - if I had a dime for every time someone asked me about my name, I'd be rich, and this site would not exist because I'd be off on some non-descript island somewhere enjoying my wealth.

What Video Game systems do you currently own?

Right now, I have a Playstation 2 (I refuse to get a Playstation 3), a Wii (Got one of the very first on release day), and an XBox 360.

What is your favorite genre?

I'd have to say Role Playing games.  Although I also like some Adventure and Strategy games as well.

What is your favorite Video Game of all time?

Wow...so many to choose from... I'm gonna go with a classic and say Secret of Mana (SNES).  That game never gets old even now.  A timeless classic.

So...what else do you like to do?

Well, due to the demands of my day job, I hardly have much time for anything really.  Besides that, the site, and (soon) current projects, my major interests include basketball (More watching than playing...I'm a huge fan of the NBA), bowling, and anime...I love watching anime, almost as much as I enjoy playing video games.

So in other words, you're a nerd right?

Absolutely!  But, remember this...us 'nerds' are intelligent - and a good portion of us become leaders in our respective professions.  Which is exactly what I plan on doing.

What is your favorite food?

Seafood...I LOVE seafood!  Especially jumbo fried shrimp.

What do you like best about your day job?

Honestly, it's the people I work with.  Seriously.  They are all a really cool bunch - laid back but when the you-know-what hits the fan, we know how to work together to get the job done.  That's rare in my industry...but it's awesome when it happens.

What do you like least about your day job?

The commute...especially now.  It's winter where I live, and since I don't have the pleasure of being in someplace warm like California or Florida, its really, really, REALLY cold...especially today!  Not to mention we get a lot of snow where I live - which makes the drive to and from work not so fun sometimes.

What was your most embarrassing moment?

Ha...I'll never forget it - it was the first day of 6th grade.  I was on my way to my second class and was running a little late.  Back then I had one of those shoulder strap bookbags.  I entered the classroom, where there were a bunch of folding chairs by the door.  Without realizing it, I turned, with the bookbag, which then knocked over ALL of the folding chairs like dominoes...the class busted with laughter after that.  I don't think I could've sunken any lower in my desk that day.
